John [chapter 4]5/4/2022 My Jesus, I Love Thee
by William R. Featherston (1862) My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine For Thee all the follies of sin I resign My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree I love Thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now I'll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath And say when the deathdew lies cold on my brow If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now In mansions of glory and endless delight I'll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now ------------------- THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN 요한복음 (part 5): Life-Giving Water, Food, and Word 생명주는 물, 양식와 말씀 (4:1-54) WATER THAT NEVER LEAVES US THIRSTY AGAIN (4:1-30) (Question #1) Because of His rising popularity that activated confrontation with the religious leaders, Jesus avoided staying in one place too long. Where did Jesus "have to pass through" on the route up north to Galilee (see verse 1-6)? [*REFLECT #1a] Samaritans and Jews were divided against each other by a history of segregation, racism, social class, and alternative locations of worship – so why did Jesus have to pass through Samaria (see verse 7)? [*REFLECT #1b] Where is Jesus passing through to meet you? (Question #2) According to Jesus, if the woman knew the gift of God and who was asking her for a drink, what would she have asked Jesus for (see verse 10-12)? [*REFLECT #2a] What is living water (see verse 13-15)? [*REFLECT #2b] How do you draw up to drink this water (see verse 16-18)? [*REFLECT #2c] This woman was thirsty for where to worship, but what is God our Father seeking (see verse 19-26)? [*REFLECT #2d] Realizing it was the promised Savior she was speaking to, what does this woman do in such a hurry to even leave behind her water jar (see verse 28-30)? [*REFLECT #2e] Realizing it is Jesus, what can be your simple testimony and action? FOOD THAT NEVER LEAVES US HUNGRY AGAIN (4:31-45) (Question #3) Jesus should have been hungry by now, but what does He say His food is when urged to eat (see verse 31-34)? [*REFLECT #3] At times, we may feel like God is starving us while we are serving others. But here, we see Jesus is fed by God while doing the will of God. How does God keep feeding you as you keep feeding others for Him? (Question #4) Usually a harvest of crop does not come immediately. Around four months of waiting period is needed. But what does Jesus say to look at now instead of later (see verse 35-38)? [*REFLECT #4a] Is the work of God urgent, or can it wait in your life (see verse 35-38)? Why or why not? What is the work you need to pick-up today, delayed from yesterday, needed for tomorrow? [*REFLECT #4b] What was the harvest that Jesus saw (see verse 39-45)? [*REFLECT #4c] What is the harvest you see in your life? WORD THAT NEVER LEAVES US FAITHLESS AGAIN (4:46-54) (Question #5) What prior event is mentioned (see verse 46), and what similarities are there with that event compared to this account of Jesus’ healing of the official’s son (remember what the servants of the wedding feast were told to do and what the official was told about his son without seeing his son [see verse 50-54])? [*REFLECT #5a] What was Jesus trying to teach the official in the crisis of his son’s terminal illness (see verse 48)? [*REFLECT #5b] At times, what sign have you demanded from God in order to believe in His words? [*REFLECT #5c] After Jesus told the official to “Go; your son will live,” what happened as he was heading home (see verse 50-51)? [*REFLECT #5d] When was the exact hour that the official’s son was healed, and why was this hour significant (see verse 52)? [*REFLECT #5e] When was a time you experienced this kind of hour/timing from God – that was exact and undeniably a moment planned and orchestrated by God Himself?
