John [chapter 5]5/11/2022 There Is A Fountain (Full of Love)
by William Cowper (1772) There is a fountain filled with blood Drawn from Immanuel's veins And sinners plunged beneath that flood Lose all their guilty stains Lose all their guilty stains Lose all their guilty stains And sinners plunged beneath that flood Lose all their guilty stains The dying thief rejoiced to see, That fountain in his day And there may I, though vile as he Wash all my sins away Wash all my sins away, Wash all my sins away And there may I, though vile as he Wash all my sins away Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood Shall never lose its pow’r Till all the ransomed church of God Are safe, to sin no more Are safe, to sin no more Are safe, to sin no more Till all the ransomed church of God Are safe, to sin no more Draw Me Close to You by Donnie McClurkin/Michael W. Smith You're all I want You're all I've ever needed You're all I want Help me know you are near HEAR THROUGH THE HEALED INVALID MAN (5:1-18) (Question #1) At one of the major feasts at Jerusalem (Passover, Pentecost, Purim), Jesus came to a pool. Who did Jesus see laying around this pool (see verse 3-5)? [*REFLECT #1a] What did Jesus know as he saw the invalid man, and what did Jesus ask him (see verse 6)? [*REFLECT #1b] Where have you been for a long time, hindering your growth in Christ? Do you want to be healed? [*REFLECT #1c] Why had the invalid man been at this pool for such a long time (see verse 7)? [*REFLECT #1d] What is the pool that you run to in your life – that supposedly can magical heal apart from the Lord? [*REFLECT #1e] Jesus did not help the invalid man into the pool. Instead, how did Jesus heal this man (see verse 8-9)? (Question #2) An important detail is given about the day when Jesus healed the invalid man. Why were the onlooking Jews so offended (see verse 9-10 & verse 16)? [*REFLECT #2a] Nowhere in Scripture is “taking up your bed” a prohibition on the Day of Rest (Sabbath). This was an extreme misinterpretation of the law to rest and cease from work. Jesus taught it was lawful to good, to heal and to save on this day. Much of these Jews prohibited such things while bending the rules for their own benefit – such as avoiding doing good to the sick and poor. How have we taken what is lawful by God and made it unlawful? [*REFLECT #2b] Instead of being joyful over this healing, they were cynical at when and how it happened. How are you being cynical (scornful, negative, skeptical, disparaging) when you should be joyful with the Lord? [*REFLECT #2c] When the Jews confronted the healed man, he couldn’t tell them who it was that healed him, for he did not know who Jesus was and Jesus had withdrawn into the large crowd. Afterwards when Jesus found the healed man in the temple, what did He say to him (see verse 14)? [*REFLECT #2d] When the Jews persecuted Him for healing on the Day of Rest, how did Jesus answer (see verse 17)? [*REFLECT #2e] Why else were the Jews seeking to persecute and even kill Jesus Christ (see verse 18)? HEAR THROUGH THE AUTHORITY OF THE SON (5:19-29) (Question #3) Although being God Himself, Jesus describes His triune relationship with God likened to a son to his father. What can the Son only do (see verse 19)? [*REFLECT #3a] Because the Father loves the Son, what does the Father do for His Son (see verse 20)? [*REFLECT #3b] What power does the Son have, just as the Father has (verse 21)? [*REFLECT #3c] To whom has the Father yielded the position of Judge and why (see verse 22-23)? [*REFLECT #3d] Who has eternal life, not coming into judgment but passing from death to life (see verse 24)? [*REFLECT #3e] How do you see what true unity looks like in the Father’s love for His Son? (Question #4) What will cause the dead – both physically and spiritually – to live again (see verse 25)? [*REFLECT #4a] What does the Father and Son both have in themselves (see verse 26)? [*REFLECT #4b] Why is the Son able to execute judgment (see verse 27)? [*REFLECT #4c] What will happen at the hour when all in the tombs hear the voice of the Son (see verse 28-29)? HEAR THROUGH THE TESTIMONIES OF JESUS (5:30-47) (Question #5) How do you know that Jesus is telling the truth about Himself (see verse 30-37)? (Question #6) What are signs that the truth of Jesus Christ does not reside inside of us (see verse 38-47)?
